Exercising with Osteoarthritis

October 27, 2024

Living with osteoarthritis can be a challenge, especially when it comes to maintaining an active lifestyle.  The stiffness, pain and limited mobility associated with this condition can make exercise seem daunting.  However, understanding the role of exercise in managing osteoarthritis can be the key to not just coping, but thriving in the face of this condition.

Osteoarthritis is a condition characterized by the degeneration of joint cartilage and the underlying bone.  It is the most common form of arthritis and can cause pain, stiffness, and decreased range of motion in the affected joints. While it may seem counterintuitive, exercise can actually help manage the symptoms of osteoarthritis and improve overall joint health.

There are several types of exercises that can be beneficial for individuals with osteoarthritis.

Low impact aerobic exercises such as walking, swimming, and cycling can help improve cardiovascular health and maintain joint mobility without putting excess strain on the joints.  These exercises can also help with weight management, which is important for reducing the stress on weight-bearing joints.

Flexibility exercises can improve the range of motion in affected joints and help reduce stiffness.  Gentle stretching exercises can help maintain or improve flexibility in the joints by working on the muscles and tendons supporting the joints, making it easier to perform daily activities.   These exercises should be performed slowly and gently, holding the stretch for 15-30 seconds, allowing the muscle to stretch and relax, avoiding any sudden or jerky movements that could cause joint pain.

Strength exercise such as weight training, resistance band exercises or body weight exercises such as squats and lunges can help build and maintain the strength of the muscles surrounding the affected joints.  Strong muscles provide better support for the joints and can help alleviate some of the stress placed on them.  It is important to start with light weights and gradually increase the resistance as strength and endurance improve.  By strengthening the muscles around the joints, individuals with osteoarthritis can experience improved stability and reduced stress on the joints during movement.

Balance exercises are also important for people with osteoarthritis.  The stiffness and reduced flexibility due to arthritis can cause balance issues and falls due to decreased range of motion and weakness in weight bearing joints.  In addition to exercises specific to balance, practices like yoga and Tai Chi can help improve balance.

In conclusion, exercise plays a crucial role in managing the symptoms of osteoarthritis.  By incorporating a combination of low-impact aerobics, flexibility, strength and balance exercises into your routine, you can help improve joint health and maintain overall physical function, thus improving overall quality of life.
